Mail Server

Tags: , , ,

So close yet so far,  I have installed Zimbra on a server at home to take care of my email and messaging requirements.  The install is very easy, it only takes about 30 mins, most of that time was spent waiting for things to load on the old box that I have chosen to test Zimbra on.  The install is straight forward with nothing too scary however I ran into a bit of a problem during the install.  It turns out that IPv6 breaks the install, once I worked this out, it was just a matter of disabling the IPv6 support on that network card and away I went.  I did spend a bit of time sifting through forums and searching Google.

Zimbra is looking good, with enough flexibility for all that I need to look after.  There is still more testing I want to do before I make this system live and open it up to external traffic.  At the moment the web interface for both Admin console and user console is easy to use, with its very our tab browsing system which makes it easy to have a couple of windows or emails open at the same time.  I am looking for to using this further and posting more about how I get on with the server and any interesting things that I might find through out the test and rollout phases.

By the way, the Zimbra Wiki and Forums are very helpful.  Personally I think they could do with a clean up (maybe archive some of the older topics).

  1. I have completed setting up Split DNS, this will help Zimbra cope with being hidden behind a firewall. Essentially I just set up a DNS server to reference itself. This is enough to fool Zimbra when it does its DNS Checks. Another gotcha was the default MTA client on SUSE. Once I disabled that I was cooking with gas (or so the saying goes).

  2. You really need to removed the truncating posts on your home page. It’s urber annoying and makes your site hard to read.

  4. I have found another issue, the mail out of the Inbox is being purged. I have done some searching and found that I just need to set the mail sleep between purge to 0, however this has not stopped the mail from being purged. I really wonder how hard it is to put a separate option to disable the mail purge. I am open to suggestion at this stage.

  5. The retention policy is specified by two sets of attributes on an account. The user retention policy set is set by the user and stored as duration attributes on the account:

    * zimbraPrefInboxReadLifetime
    * zimbraPrefInboxUnreadLifetime
    * zimbraPrefSentLifetime
    * zimbraPrefJunkLifetime
    * zimbraPrefTrashLifetime

    The system retention policy is set by the administrator. It allows the administrator to specify a site-level retention policy that overrides the user policy. These attributes are also at the account/COS level, but not modifiable by the end user:

    * zimbraMailTrashLifetime
    * zimbraMailSpamLifetime
    * zimbraMailMessageLifetime

    When a mailbox is purged, all attributes are considered. In cases where there’s both a system and user-level policy is specified for the same folder, the shorter interval is used.

    There is one safeguard in place. If zimbraMailMessageLifetime is set to less than 30 days, an interval of 30 days is used. All other attributes don’t have a safeguard.

  6. Thanks for the suggestion Michael, but so far the only thing that seems to work is setting both values to 9999999999, it will haunt me one day, I just know it.

  7. Even after all of this, emails are still disappearing from my inbox. Sent emails remain in the Sent items folder. I tried deleting the account and recreating it. I am thinking that I may need to do a re-install to fix the problem.
